Men: How do you feel about being asked out?

I met someone last week and am kicking myself that I didn't ask him to stay for a drink at the bar we were at but I wasn't feeling well so decided to go home. Next time I see him, I plan to ask him to stay for a drink. We seemed to click when we had a little chat and even shared a bit of banter and a laugh. He's older than me, but a mutual friend has said he's single, which is a good start. But do men mind being asked out or do they feel emasculated by it, eg, feel their role is being taken away from them if that makes sense? And would asking him to join me for a drink be enough of a hint that I am interested in him or just seem to matey? I've been celibate for over a year and have also never taken the plunge and asked someone out before...
