How much was your wedding budget?

I'm getting married in June, officially got engaged just very recently. We are worknig out our budget now, but I don't want to spend 10's of 1000's. My friend spent 12 grand and is in so much debt that she can't get her own place or buy groceries. Other friends have only spent $500, but it wasn't the kind of celebration I would like. I want something nice, but simple. I'm not extravagant, but want people to feel like some actual thought was put into it. For those who had nice but not over the top weddings, how much did you spend?
